BECOME A FIREMAN

The Tioughnioga Volunteer Fire Department is always interested in community members who are willing to commit their time, effort, and responsibility to serving others. Membership is open to individuals who meet the department’s requirements and are prepared to take part in training, meetings, and emergency response.

ELIGIBILITY

To be considered for active membership, applicants must:
– Be at least 18 years of age
– Be a citizen of the United States
– Be of good moral character
– Live within the fire district or an adjoining district, in accordance with department and state requirements 

-Applicants must also complete a medical physical and pulmonary exam as part of the application process.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Prospective members must submit a written application sponsored by two active members of the department. Applications are reviewed by a membership committee, followed by a vote of the active membership. Final approval is also subject to Village authorization.

New members are accepted on a probationary basis and must demonstrate commitment, reliability, and readiness to serve.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD & TRAINING

All new active members serve a probationary period of twelve months. During this time, members are expected to:
– Attend at least 50% of department drills
– Attend at least 50% of department meetings
– Enroll in and complete the Firefighter Essentials training course

Participation in approved training programs may count toward drill attendance. The department provides guidance and support throughout the training process.

ONGOING RESPONSIBILITIES

Volunteer firefighters are expected to maintain training standards, follow the department’s chain of command, and respond professionally during emergencies, drills, and public events. This role requires dependability, teamwork, and a willingness to continually learn. Serving as a volunteer firefighter is a serious commitment, but it is also an opportunity to make a direct and meaningful impact in the community.
