The Tioughnioga Volunteer Fire Department, better known as the DeRuyter Fire Department, serves the Village of DeRuyter and surrounding areas with one clear purpose: protecting life and property through emergency response, fire suppression, rescue, and public safety education.

Our department is made up of trained volunteers who respond to emergencies at all hours, often balancing this responsibility with full-time jobs and family life. We operate in coordination with the Village of DeRuyter, maintain and operate fire apparatus and equipment, and participate in New York State mutual aid to support neighboring communities when needed.

Beyond emergency response, the department is committed to prevention and preparedness. This includes fire safety education, inspections, and community outreach aimed at reducing risk before emergencies occur. We believe strong fire protection starts with informed residents and proactive safety practices.

The Tioughnioga Volunteer Fire Department is governed by elected officers and operates under established bylaws, policies, and state law. Leadership, training requirements, and operational standards are designed to ensure accountability, readiness, and professionalism at every level of service.

As a volunteer organization, we rely on community support to maintain equipment, training, and facilities. Fundraising efforts, including the annual Firemen’s Fair, directly support the operational needs of the department and help ensure we are prepared to serve when emergencies happen.
